Statewide Initiative to Boost Urban Green Cover, Biodiversity, and Community-Led Environmental Conservation

*Mumbai, June 12, 2026:* The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has announced an ambitious statewide tree plantation and conservation campaign during Van Mahotsav Week, setting a target of planting one lakh trees across Maharashtra from July 1 to July 7, 2026.

The initiative aims to strengthen environmental sustainability, expand urban green spaces, enhance biodiversity, and address challenges posed by climate change, pollution, and rising temperatures. MHADA Vice President and CEO IAS Sanjeev Jaiswal has directed all regional boards to ensure effective planning and execution of the campaign.

Emphasizing that tree plantation is a long-term environmental responsibility, Jaiswal stated that equal importance will be given to the survival, maintenance, and conservation of trees. The drive will prioritize native and fruit-bearing species suitable for local ecosystems, encouraging greater public engagement in environmental stewardship.

Building on last year’s success, when MHADA planted approximately 1.5 lakh trees and geo-tagged over 1.14 lakh of them for monitoring, the authority will continue using technology-driven tracking to ensure sustainable outcomes. Every tree planted under this year’s campaign will also be geo-tagged for regular maintenance and evaluation.

A key highlight of the initiative is MHADA’s plan to develop dense urban forests using the Miyawaki method on selected non-developable land parcels within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The campaign will also involve local bodies, housing societies, NGOs, environmental organizations, and citizens, transforming environmental conservation into a community-driven movement.

Tree plantation activities will be carried out across MHADA housing colonies, open plots, public spaces, and project areas while ensuring compatibility with future infrastructure and development plans. The authority will also promote the creation of green spaces within housing colonies and encourage plantation on private lands with owners’ consent.

Through this large-scale effort, MHADA aims to enhance carbon sequestration, protect biodiversity, and create healthier living environments for future generations while encouraging citizens to actively participate in safeguarding the environment.
