MHADA Begins Distribution of 574 Rehabilitation Homes Under Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project

The distribution of 574 rehabilitation homes to eligible residents of Wings B and C of Rehabilitation Building No. 1 has begun under the Maharashtra government’s Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project. The process started on September 10, 2026, at the MHADA Project Office in Sumer Kendra, Worli, Mumbai, following the receipt of the Occupancy Certificate for both wings.

Distribution and possession letters will be issued on working days from 11 AM to 6 PM, excluding public holidays. Eligible residents have been asked to appear personally according to the schedule displayed at the project office and bring the required documents to complete the possession process. Distribution will take place first for Wing C and then for Wing B.

The latest handover adds to the rehabilitation work already completed under the project. In August 2025, 556 rehabilitation homes were distributed to eligible residents, while the distribution of another 827 homes in Wings F, G and H of Rehabilitation Building No. 1 began in May 2026. MHADA is continuing the handover in phases as individual buildings receive their Occupancy Certificates.

The Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project is part of a large-scale urban renewal program covering the historic BDD Chawls at Worli, N. M. Joshi Marg-Parel and Naigaon. Spread across 192 acres, the project is being implemented by MHADA through its Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board. At Worli, 9,689 eligible residents from 121 old chawls are set to receive modern rehabilitation homes.

Under the redevelopment plan, residents who previously lived in 160-square-foot rooms will receive modern 2-bedroom homes with 500 square feet of carpet area at no cost and with ownership rights, subject to eligibility. The project includes 34 rehabilitation buildings, each planned at 40 stories, along with parking facilities, landscaped areas and modern building infrastructure.

The new homes are being developed with features such as vitrified flooring, granite kitchen platforms, aluminum-frame windows and modern plumbing fixtures. The buildings also include fire safety systems, three elevators, a stretcher elevator and a dedicated fire elevator to improve safety and accessibility for residents.

The redevelopment is also designed to create a self-sufficient community with facilities such as a commercial complex, school, gymnasium, hospital and hostel. Planned infrastructure includes a sewage treatment plant, solar energy systems and rainwater harvesting facilities. MHADA will maintain the rehabilitated buildings for 12 years as part of the project.

The redevelopment also aims to protect the cultural heritage of the BDD Chawls. Jamboree Maidan and Ambedkar Maidan will be preserved, while an old chawl building will be conserved and developed as a museum. The initiative combines housing redevelopment with heritage preservation, giving eligible residents modern homes while retaining important parts of the area’s history.
